Moodle is a software package for producing internet-based programs and web sites. This is a global development project designed to support a social constructionist framework of education.

Moodle is provided freely as Open Source software (under GNU Public License). Basically this means Moodle is copyrighted, but that you have the additional freedom. You are permitted to copy, use and modify Moodle provided that you agree to: provide resources to others, not alter or remove copyright licenses and the original, and apply the same license any derivative works. Read the license for full details and please contact the copyright holder directly if you have any questions.

Moodle can be installed on each computer that can run PHP, and can support the type of SQL database (MySQL for example). This can run on Windows and Mac operating systems and many flavors of linux (eg Red Hat or Debian GNU). There are many knowledgable Moodle Partners to assist you, even host your Moodle site.

The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful for programmers and educational theory. It is also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things like that happen to you to do, fun to play that often leads to insight and creativity. Review

The purpose is to reduce the admin involvement to a minimum, while still maintaining high security
Supports various authentication mechanisms through plug-in authentication module, which enables easy integration with existing systems.
Standard email method: students can create their own login account. The email address is verified by confirmation.
LDAP method: account logins can be checked against the LDAP server. Admin can specify which fields to use.
IMAP, POP3, NNTP: account logins are checked against a mail server or news. SSL, certificates and TLS are supported.
Students are encouraged to build a profile online, including photos, descriptions. Email address can be protected from display if required.
Each user can specify their own time zone, and every date in Moodle is translated to a different time (eg date of posting, assignment due date, etc.)
Each user can select the language used for the Moodle interface (English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, etc.)...

Registration

Teachers can add a "enrollment key" their course to prevent non-students. They can give this key face-to-face or via personal email etc
